Hi, Just got computer back from shop where - rather than upgrade - they did a clean install of Win11. I was under the impression from them they'd backup everything on a new "backup" drive they installed to double my capacity as part of the upgrade process.

They're version of backing up Thunderbird left me with a folder "Thunderbird_profile_backup.zip" that is 9,698,657kb in size.

I am attempting to install Thunderbird on the essentially new computer and restore all data from the previous installation.

Is this even possible anymore at this point?

I have data in that file that is important not only financially but archived family info from now deceased members... I'd really like to recover it.

Running Thunderbird with three accounts on my desktop PC - two 'btinternet.com' accounts and one 'gmail.com' account. Inboxes have no more than 20 emails in them, as I delete unwanted ones and transfer others to various sub-folders ( In excess of 40 No.). Today I suddenly found that incoming emails on both bt accounts were not showing the subject or sender and the content is displayed in plain text (txt) format - no problem with the gmail account.

I have compacted and repaired the inbox folders but no difference. If I send a message from either of the bt accounts to the other the problem occurs, but if I send a message from either of the bt accounts to my gmail account, it goes through fine. I can receive bt emails fine on my laptop. I assume this is a thunderbird problem on my PC but not sure where to start - would be really grateful for any guidance.

When I try to start Thunderbirs I get the following error message

Try reinstalling Thunderbird. I have downloaded the latest version for Windows (11) from the website but still get the same error. Up until now I have not had an issues. Any suggestions? Thanks Anthony

Response: "Unable to log in at server. Probably wrong configuration, username, or password". Two other workstations use the same account and they are not having any issues with the account.

If I open the insert link dialog and my email is open on my main screen - the dialog box opens behind the email message. The email cannot be moved, edited, saved or closed. It does not show as a task. All I can do at this time is shut my computer down and lose what I have composed to that point. This happens every time - it is easily repeated. Maybe there is something I need to set to have the dialog open somewhere else or above the message?

I have noticed a difference in the email message background appearance in Thunderbird (version 140.1.1 ESR) on two different computers. On one machine, the background is dark (see attachment 1), while on the other it is light (see attachment 2), even though I am using the same profile and software version.

I am attaching the perfs.js configuration file along with two screenshots illustrating the difference.

Could you please help identify which specific setting or option controls the dark background mode in the message view, so I can unify the appearance across both computers?

Hello all!

I use Thunderbird as a local archive for my email. I have two accounts in the application: my home email via my ISP (POP) which I predominately use and my gmail (IMAP) which I don't generally use. There are years of messages in folders and sub-folder under the POP account, but nothing under the IMAP.

I’m up to date with Thunderbird at v140.1.0esr (aarch64) on my iMac with Sequoia 15.8.

On 07/22/2025 I went to download some messages via my ISP POP account and saw that a whole bunch of my email folders no longer had any subfolders and were empty of any messages. Some were also duplicated. Please see the attached image.

I haven’t changed any settings in years, and I do not have any add-ins. One of the nice things about Thunderbird has been its solidity and simplicity.

After every session, I would empty my trash and compact.

Suddenly my email seems to be gone along with sub-folders while top level folders are duplicated.

Wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this? Since I don't do anything fancy with the application and with the suddenness of this issue, I can't image I'm the only person having it? I’m quite concerned I may lose many years’ worth of messages.

Hi all, Roughly two weeks ago I lost the ability to send e-mails through Thunderbird for both my Hotmail account and my work account which is also Outlook based. All incoming messages are fine and my accounts sync non-outgoing messages just fine (in fact, my typical way of sending e-mails is to save to drafts and then pull up the draft in Outlook and send it).

I know that this has been a problem for multiple users over the years and I've tried all the typical solutions. I'm currently using: outlook.office365.com Port 587 Starttls Oauth2

Although I have tried the workarounds that I've found in the discussion boards including: - alternative ports -SSL/TLS instead - no authentication (this worked for a similar problem many years ago)

To me, the most glaring detail is that as soon as I'm off campus, it returns to working immediately which would suggest that the work network is doing the blocking. I've talked with our T&I multiple times and they confirm that nothing that they no of is blocking my SMTP which means its probably a setting they don't know about. They can also log into the e-mail settings and confirm that my SMTP is specifically not blocked (which makes sense because it works off campus).

For context, we use Crowdstrike as our endpoint protection.

We are a small place and my IT group is being pretty cool by throwing some time and resources at this. However, since none of them have any experience with Thunderbird, it would be great to give them a list of things to try.

I have a new laptop and am trying to link my Fastmail email account to Thunderbird as I have done in the past. Fastmail uses unique "App Passwords" for each device/app accessing the account, but the current version of Thunderbird does not ask for a password at all during the automatic setup. Based on the information provided about gmail it looks like perhaps this is happening automatically, but my contacts and calendar are not linking. I also got an email from fastmail indicating that a 3rd party calendar app was denied access because it didn't use an app password. Could use help linking calendar and contacts!
